Educating rita what is it about

Bored with teaching undergraduates English literature, Dr. Frank Bryant Sir Michael Caine morosely reflects through a whiskey glass on his failed marriage and his attempt at becoming a poet. His world is turned upside down by the arrival of Rita Dame Julie Walters , a hairdresser who has decided to find herself by taking an Open University course.

Excited by her freewheeling and acute observations, and by Rita herself, Frank also feels a deep sadness as he watches her warm impulsive reactions being replaced by the sort of cold analytical approach he so much loathes in other students and colleagues. Rita Dame Julie Walters crashes into Dr. Frank Bryant's Sir Michael Caine's life wanting an education, although she has no idea what it is that she's asking.

Her brash sincerity earns the respect of the doctor who has previously resigned himself to a life of empty lectures and booze. Rita's character is a breath of fresh air for Bryant, and he begins to care about someone, or something, for that matter, for the first time since his wife left him. I'm not one to lose touch with reality, but if I ever showed any signs of getting slightly wonderful I'd be cut down and put in my place, rightly so!

People don't see education as a route to salvation in the way they did in the year this was written'. The "Franks" of the education world today wouldn't have the luxury of being able to teach a girl outside of his curriculum who came to his office once a week, someone like Frank would be responsible for at least students today. We're now so far away from , that there's actually something kind of exotic about setting it in its own time. Rita will be played by Karen who was our featured artist last year and one of the most versatile actresses in the city and one of the funniest.

He will be playing Frank, a disillusioned alcoholic University professor, who must tutor a young working class girl who wants to better herself by studying literature at University.

Their relationship has an impact on Frank and his sense of self that can be seen throughout the play. A twenty-six-year-old hairdresser, Rita, who is eager to learn at University, forges a tentative relationship with middle-aged English tutor Frank. Karen Baum who was a Featured Artist, will return to play Rita. At their next tutorial, Rita impresses Frank with her theory that Ibsen's Peer Gynt could make a powerful radio play. That night, Denny discovers that Rita is secretly still on the pill; she explains that she doesn't want a baby just yet.

Denny is furious and throws her essay and college books onto a bonfire in the backyard. Rita relates these events to Frank at her next tutorial and explains how much she has changed since she started going out with Denny. When Rita sees a production of Macbeth, she is overwhelmed and rushes to see Frank. She interrupts a seminar, and Frank asks her to join the lesson. He also invites her and Denny to a dinner party at his house.

Denny refuses to go and Rita arrives at Frank's house alone. However, she doesn't have the courage to ring the doorbell. She goes to her local pub instead, where Denny is drinking with her family and friends. When they next meet, Frank reproaches Rita for not coming and she apologises, saying she feels out of place both at home and at university.

Soon afterwards, Rita's younger sister gets married.
