High overhead is the constellation of Gemini the Twins. Unlike many constellations, Gemini really looks like what it is supposed to be — twin people.
To remember which is which, remember that the star Castor is closer to Polaris, the North Star, than his brother Pollux. The star Pollux was one of the first discovered to be harbouring an extrasolar planet — a planet beyond our solar system. Now, thanks to various methods including the orbiting Kepler spacecraft, we know of thousands of extrasolar planets.
Astronomers have found that nearly half of all stars have companions. While most of these companion groupings occur as double stars two stars in orbit around one another Castor actually is made up of three pairs of double stars six stars in total.
Did you know during the early history of Mesopotamia, information about the celestial objects was recorded on Sumerian tablets that date back to BCE?
One of these tablets has an interesting story to share about the two minor Gods, Castor and Pollux, who are the two brightest stars of the Gemini constellation. The brothers, despite having two different fathers, were considered inseparable. When the mortal brother, Castor, died, Pollux, the immortal one, went distraught. His father Zeus helped him by making Castor immortal and turning them both into the two brightest stars of the Gemini constellation.
Fun story, right? Geminis are those born between May 21st and June 21st. Your Gemini baby Girl or Gemini baby boy is more likely to have the following personality traits.
Gemini kids are immensely observant and are constantly learning. Things and people that stimulate their minds always attract them. Your Gemini baby loves it when you interact with her. She cannot have a dull moment ever, and she reciprocates well when you interact with her through sounds and words. Some Gemini babies enjoy noise, and sometimes chaos too!
Their minds are always occupied with creative ideas and thoughts because they are generally observant. A Gemini child will most likely hang out with equally creative friends because she finds them like-minded and motivating. They are unpredictable too. Some Gemini kids might find making a choice between two or more things difficult. When given options, they will keep going back and will take forever to choose one.
This could seem like a concerning Gemini personality trait, but when well-wishers she can trust surround a Gemini baby, making a decision is easier for her. Gemini kids are extremely loyal, supporting, and encouraging as friends. They are incredibly social, make friends in a jiffy, and somehow understand how important it is for them to maintain their friendship.
Therefore, they tend to be extremely loyal to their pals. This month is Gemini. The constellation Gemini is at its highest point in the sky this month at about 10 p. The twins of Gemini, Castor and Pollux, are within 5 degrees of each other. Castor, the northernmost of the pair is only slightly more than 5 degrees from the zenith point. Those two stars are so similar in apparent magnitude that ancient astronomers named them after the mythological twins. When looking up from Orion, left is toward the east.
The constellation Gemini is one of those originally labeled by Ptolemy and is one of the 12 in the zodiac. Gemini is an elongated rectangle, with Castor and Pollux as the heads at one end, and dimmer stars symmetrically filling in the rest, down to the feet at the other end. The way I remember which is Castor and which is Pollux requires knowing two other bright stars of the winter hexagon, which I have written about in other columns.
Castor, at magnitude 1. That means that through a telescope you can easily see two stars of magnitude 1. Not readily apparent is a third, much dimmer star of magnitude 9. This is where the description may sound like a television knife commercial. Each of those three stars has also been found to be a spectroscopic binary, so there are a total of six stars in this one system.
Pollux, at magnitude 1. It is the closest giant star to the sun and has a confirmed exoplanet orbiting it.
