It is not what they expected to hear it. It takes aim at all of these prized dispositions and virtues and their worldview. They didn't expect this to come out of Jesus' mouth and wherever Jesus went, He preached these.
These aren't platitudinal. I mean, these are detonated on the culture. I'll give you an example. Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of God. That's not what they expected to come before theirs is the kingdom of God. What they expected to hear was, "You're Abraham, therefore yours is the kingdom of God. Jesus says, "No, it's actually the broken people, those who recognize their need for God, the poor in spirit, people who are spiritual beggars inherit the kingdom.
He didn't say, good people. He didn't say, moral people. He said, broken people. Those are the ones that inherit the kingdom of God.
So Jesus' audience is sitting there having learned what they've learned from their tradition, and Jesus drops this grenade and it touches every nerve in the audience because every single one of them underneath the facade of their life realize they actually are poor in spirit. And so He turns the thing upside down. They realize, as the Bible will go on to explain, that they need righteousness which is much greater than their own, which is exactly what Jesus says in Matthew chapter five unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and the Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Basically what He said was, "You're not getting in in your own righteousness. And so the Beatitudes go through and they just throw off all of these misunderstandings about what constitutes a devotion to God and what man truly needs. It is the Beatitudes, which ultimately get Jesus killed as He explains them in every possible way that He can as they flow. That is their principle and core meeting through all of His teaching and put Him on the cross , and save those by His death who are poor in spirit.

Paraphrase: "Blessed are those who mourn for their sins, for they shall receive forgiveness and life eternal. Similar to "the poor," "the meek" are those who submit to God's authority and make him Lord. Revelation says God's children will "inherit all things. Paraphrase: "Blessed are those who submit to God as Lord, for they will inherit everything he possesses. This " righteousness " refers to Jesus Christ.
To "be filled" is the satisfaction of our soul's desire. Paraphrase: "Blessed are those who passionately long for Christ, for he will satisfy their souls. We reap what we sow. Those who demonstrate mercy will receive mercy. Likewise, those who have received great mercy will show great mercy. Mercy is shown through forgiveness, kindness, and compassion toward others. Paraphrase: "Blessed are those who show mercy through forgiveness, kindness, and compassion, for they will receive mercy.
The "pure in heart" are those who have been cleansed from within. This is not outward righteousness that can be seen by men, but inward holiness that only God can see. The Bible says in Hebrews that without holiness, no one will see God. Paraphrase: "Blessed are those who have been purified from the inside out, being made clean and holy, for they will see God. The Bible says we have peace with God through Jesus Christ. Reconciliation through Christ brings restored fellowship peace with God.
Paraphrase: "Blessed are those who have been reconciled to God through Jesus Christ and bring this same message of reconciliation to others. All who have peace with God are his children. Just as Jesus faced persecution , so will his followers. Those who endure by faith rather than hide their faith to avoid persecution are genuine followers of Christ. If every man were humble and poor in spirit, there would be no war! If we are humble and appreciate that all of our gifts and blessings come from God, we grow in love and gratitude for Jesus Christ our Savior.
But this can only produce mourning and regret over our own sins and the sins of this world, for we have hurt the one who has been so good to us. One also mourns for the suffering of others. Gregory describes another reason to mourn: the more one ascends in meditation of Divine Truth, Beauty, and Goodness, and then realize the poverty of human nature, man can only be left in sorrow. When one contemplates that we were made in the image and likeness of God and lived in Paradise, the Garden of Eden, and compare that to our present state after the Fall, one can only mourn our present condition.
But the sentence continues that they shall be comforted , by the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, and hopefully one day in the Kingdom of Heaven. Pray for the Fruit of the Holy Spirit Galatians - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Mourning in this context is called a blessing, because mourning our fallen nature creates in us a desire to improve ourselves and to do what is right!
Gregory of Nyssa saw the Beatitudes as arranged like so many steps, so as to facilitate the ascent from one to another. For example, a humble person comes to be meek, or becomes gentle and kind, and exhibits a docility of spirit, even in the face of adversity and hardship.
Jesus was "meek and humble of heart" Matthew A person that is meek is one that exhibits self-control. Augustine advises us to be meek in the face of the Lord, and not resist but be obedient to him. Paul calls for the obedience of faith in the beginning and end of his Letter to the Romans , Obedience and submission to the will of God are certainly not in vogue these days, but they will bring one peace in this world and in the next.
Justice and righteousness in the New Covenant indicate the fulfillment of God's will in your heart and soul. It is not mere observance of the law Matthew , but rather an expression of brotherly love I John A continuous desire for justice and moral perfection will lead one to a fulfillment of that desire - a transition and conversion to holiness. This is true for all the virtues - if you hunger and thirst for temperance, you will head towards the goal you have in mind. Augustine called the Beatitudes the ideal for every Christian life!
In his discourse on the Lord's Sermon on the Mount, he noted the correspondence of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and their necessity in fulfilling the Beatitudes.
For example, one must have the gift of fortitude so one may be courageous in seeking social justice. Mercy is the loving disposition towards those who suffer distress. Love , compassion, and forgiveness towards a family member or neighbor will bring peace in your relationships. We say in the Lord's Prayer : Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. As we are merciful to others, we pray our Heavenly Father will be merciful to us!
Jesus reminds us that as "you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me" Matthew Jesus on the Cross extends his mercy to the repentant thief: "Today you will be with me in Paradise" Luke James is quite direct in his Letter when he writes: "For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.
Mercy triumphs over judgment" James The following are ways to be merciful to others as well as to be obedient in faith to Christ our Savior. God is hidden. But Jesus says the pure of heart shall see God! To be pure of heart means to be free of all selfish intentions and self-seeking desires. What a beautiful goal! How many times have any of us performed an act perfectly free of any personal gain?
