With both a strong magnetic field and fast rotation, a neutron star produces strong electromagnetic currents that can accelerate charged particles to high speeds, producing radiation over a broad range of wavelengths, including light.

In a typical neutron star, the magnetic field is trillions of times that of the Earth's magnetic field; however, in a magnetar, the magnetic field is another times stronger. In all neutron stars, the crust of the star is locked together with the magnetic field so that any change in one affects the other.

Their crystalline crusts contain relatively ordinary electrons and ions the latter of which are made of neutrons and protons.
