Poaching is more lucrative than other jobs that are available in the region; a harsh reality faced by many individuals and communities. Poaching is also dangerous to the environment. When the North American Gray Wolf was on the brink of extinction , due to trophy hunting and poaching, the elk populations in Yellowstone National Park soared.

With no natural predator, the elk nearly ate the aspen tree to extinction. Now, because of the increasing populations of gray wolves in the park, elk populations are balancing out and the aspen tree is recovering. Our ecosystems are sensitive and must be preserved. The economic challenges of a community can lead to poaching, which in turn can lead to endangerment and in the worst cases, extinction of different species. We need various species of flora and fauna in our environmental ecosystems so that they can maintain healthy and balanced.

The survival of our own species depends on it. If you suspect poaching, use this list to contact the proper authorities. If you are a witness to poaching, dial and report it. Wildlife poaching is a crime and should be treated as such. With this being said, if the poacher chooses to use a trap that creating a hole in the ground is necessary, it is very likely that the hole will be left there even after the poaching has occurred.

This is a huge issue because the natural growth of plants can be disturbed, as well as other animals may fall into the trap and not be able to get out. Disregard to the environment may also lead to the harm of hikers, park rangers, and other humans who would not suspect a trap on their path. Animal poaching affects humans in many ways as the ecosystem is directly connected to the every day life of people.

Two serious problems that face humans due to poaching are spread of food-borne illness and lack of natural resources. These are both due to the unregulation of the amount and type of animals that are caught and sold. Poaching is a great spreader of food-borne illnesses, as seen with the country wide spread of Ebola from monkey meat in Congo and the outbreak of Anthrax in Uganda, because the meat has not been monitored or inspected by the government.

The lack of governance over which meats are viable to be sold and which are a health hazard to the public results in a much greater risk of outbreak of the food-borne diseases due to the fact that poachers are selling whatever kind of meat they catch to make a profit, not to help the people who are desperate for food in the very poor countries through out Africa.
